Grind wheat.
I know, you thought it was going to be something exciting. Matt is gone for a few days and I know he wouldn't have enjoyed our Family Home Day. I decided to show Brinley how to grind wheat with a hand grinder. Well, she couldn't grind the wheat, but she was pouring it in and making a mess.
Well, you can't just grind wheat, you have to make something out of it. So we made bread too. I tried a new recipe and i overcooked it. Probably because the book is some 30 years old and I'm sure their ovens weren't as efficient as they are now. Eventhough it was a little dry, it tasted alright. I think I will try another recipe next time.
We then made potato soup for dinner to go with our bread. Why not? It was snowing outside. Luckily, it's not sticking.

You are such a cool, amazing person. Thank you for sharing your life with us. I almost always cry when I read your blog. Thank you for helping me appreciate all that I have. I feel so blessed to be a small part of your large family!
My kids would think that was a cool activity, Kevin too for that matter. I used to grind wheat on my mission--my companion brought her own hand grinder. And growing up a friend's mom had a wheat grinder attached to a bicycle.
We had snow Sunday--a far cry from our recoed breaking 85 the previous weekend. Will Spring ever come????
Isn't that what every wife does when her husband is away? LOL!! Wheat bread sounds so good, think I will break in my new kitchen aide today and make some!!
Grinding your own wheat. You never stop amazing me.
I ground wheat ONCE! I need to do some more but not right now! I wish I had some of your yummy bread.
Bread is definitely a trial and error type of an experience. Let's just say, my second time around the bread far surpassed my first inedible loaves.
I have wanted to grind wheat. Where did you get your grinder? I have heard you can use coffee grinders.
I am getting the feeling that you and I think a lot a like. I have a fun and simple butter recipe you could do with Brinley to go along with your bread. Basically you get a mason jar some heavy cream, two or three marbles and shake the cream with the marbles in the mason jar until it turns to butter.
Arah is their no end to your talents? I don't know if I can be your friend anymore- my inadequacies seem to pile up in your presence...
Marnie~ I got mine through a company called Emergency Essentials. It's out of Utah. If you have a Sportsmans wharehouse, they also carry them. They have a hand crank blender too. And I LOVE IT! It is super easy to use and Brinely loves to make smoothies with me.
Mary~ WHATEVER! Talents? I just love to learn and some things I enjoy more than others. If I can't go to school, i can learn things at home, right? Lifes a journey, learn what you can.
by the way, I think Brinley and I will try butter next...thanks Marnie!
Grinding your own wheat. You ROCK Arah!!! I think if my husband was gone I would have chosen to go buy bread that someone else made. Looks like fun though
well aren't you the little miss martha stewart!
Hey Arah! That is so cool. We had a home storage ward dinner last year and I was asked to make whole wheat bread rolls. We have a grinder also, so I gave it a real hearty effort, but it did NOT turn out at all. My dough ended up just being a big pile of gritty nastiness. Oh well. It was still fun.
Arah you are simply amazing. Always doing something new and creative and exciting. Do you want to come and teach me how to be more like you. Jill
Ahhh, a true Pioneer woman after my own heart. Matt would have loved it I think. We sure thought about you lots while Matt was here. Hope you are feeling well. Love you...
